It is that time of the year again – the graduation ceremonies to celebrate the academic achievement of thousands of university students across the country.
But Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) stood out from the rest, as the graduates gave a standing ovation, not to the deans sitting on the stage but to those who sat at the back of the hall – their parents and loved ones.
In a video that went viral recently, USM’s vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail said the graduates should realise that the sacrifices, prayers, and blessings from their loved ones that contributed to their success.
“Remember that there is endless support behind your success today. Achieving success is no easy feat and requires a lot of sacrifices.
“Now, I would like to invite the graduates to stand up and give a big round of applause to your parents and your loved ones who are here today,” she said.
Her emotional speech appeared to have touched the hearts of those present, with many were seen wiping their tears and comforting each other.
“Now please look at the faces of your parents, wife, husband witnessing your success. Look at the tears they shed. Hug them and appreciate their sacrifices,” she said.
The video, which was posted on USM’s Facebook page, was first published on Oct 28 and has since garnered almost a half million views and close to 8,000 reactions.
