Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, has been named the ‘Most Affordable City in the World for Students’ three times between 2013 and 2017.

In an annual study conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Best Student Cities Survey, it cited Kuala Lumpur as an ideal combination of low living costs and relatively low tuition fees.

Kuala Lumpur also proved to be popular among students when it is ranked 30th in the ‘Student View’ category, due to its multicultural nature and the exciting student lifestyle it has to offer.

One of the respondents in the survey said that the tolerance of different views and religions as well as the high affordability of the city as some of the best things about studying in Kuala Lumpur.

The result is based on the survey responses of 18,000 students worldwide.

The report also noted that 40% of those surveyed expressed their willingness to stay in Kuala Lumpur after their study period ended.

Meanwhile, a 2014 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) report titled ‘Higher Education Asia: Expanding Up, Expanding Out’ stated that the higher education costs in Malaysia were cheaper compared to traditional study destination countries.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh had said that the recognition awarded by QS Best Student Cities Survey was a testament to the efforts taken by the Government and higher learning institutions in making Malaysia a top study destination.
